This subreddit is intended for posting your own personal tattoos, or your tattoos as a professional artist. All are understandable reactions and often reflect an individuals personal upbringing and philosophy of the human body.Hey there, welcome to /r/tattoos. My family's reactions have been a little more diverse ranging from the enthusiastic, to the quizzically interested to downright opposition. LM: What was the reaction from friends/ family?ĪC: The overwhelming majority of my friends reacted positively to me being tattooed (though one could chalk this up to the fact that a large number of my friends have tattoos or at least an interest therein). LM: Have you got any tattoos we can't see?ĪC: None of my tattoos can be seen if I'm wearing pants and a long-sleeved shirt, but if you're referring to tattoos on areas of my body the display of which might be contrary to your editorial line, then no I have no tattoos that you cannot see. If this appears to be the case then I will try to go ahead with the idea that I had in mind. Then I put the idea on the back-burner for at least another year to ensure that it is an idea that I am comfortable with after an extended period of reflection. I then take this original image and give it time to mature and take form as something that would actually make a good tattoo in my mind (this process can take anywhere from a few months to several years). Generally the inspiration for a tattoo starts with a simple image that will pop into my mind when I see a certain painting, hear a particular song, or read a certain text. The banner as well as the frigate birds are tattoos that are shared (to a greater or lesser extent of exactitude) by some of my closest friends and are therefore symbols of the connection I share with those people. Similarly the design on my right shoulder is inspired by the work of one of my greatest influences, New Orleans artist, musician and poet Mike Williams. The fleur-de-lys is a symbol of my French background as it was the crest of the French Royal family. LM: What was the inspiration for your tattoo(s)?ĪC: Most of my tattoos are the result of a relatively lengthy thought process. The banner was done by Adam from Name Brand and the skull was recently completed by Matt West who is apprenticing at Depot Town. The Cobra is courtesy of Bill Falsetta, at the time of Name Brand Tattoo in Ann Arbor (now Depot Town Tattoo in Ypsi). LM: Where did you get your tattoo(s) done?ĪC: The fleur-de-lys, frigate birds and my right shoulder piece were done by Leo Zulueta at Spiral Tattoo in Ann Arbor. LM: What age did you get your first tattoo? A black-and-white fleur-de-lys on my left shoulder, a traditional Polynesian design representing frigate birds on my right forearm, a full-color King Cobra extending from my left knee down to my ankle, a black-and-white banner reading "Esto Perpetua" on my inner right arm, a black and red stylized bird design on my right shoulder and a skull on the back of my right arm above my elbow.
